Overview

Roopkund trek is a popular trekking destination located in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand, India. It is known for its picturesque beauty, stunning landscapes, and the mysterious Roopkund Lake, also known as the "Skeleton Lake."

The trek to Roopkund usually starts from a village called Lohajung and takes you through dense forests, beautiful meadows, glacial streams, and high altitude snow-covered trails. The trek is of moderate to difficult level and generally takes around 7-8 days to complete, depending on the itinerary and the pace of the trekking group.

The main highlight of the Roopkund trek is the Roopkund Lake, located at an altitude of approximately 5,029 meters (16,499 feet). This small glacial lake is known for the hundreds of human skeletons found in and around it. The skeletons are believed to be from the 9th century and are thought to be the remains of a group of pilgrims or soldiers caught in a severe hailstorm.

In addition to the lake, the trek offers breathtaking views of the surrounding Himalayan peaks, including Trishul, Nanda Ghunti, and Chaukhamba. You will also come across enchanting meadows like Bedni Bugyal and Ali Bugyal, which are adorned with vibrant alpine flowers during the blooming season.

It's important to note that the Roopkund trek involves high altitude and challenging terrains, so it is recommended for experienced trekkers or those who are physically fit and have prior trekking experience. It's advisable to go with a licensed trekking agency or a certified guide who can ensure your safety and provide necessary support throughout the trek.

Due to its popularity, Roopkund trek attracts a significant number of trekkers every year, especially during the summer months of May and June. Proper planning, acclimatization, and carrying essential trekking gear are crucial for a successful and enjoyable trekking experience.

Please keep in mind that my knowledge cutoff is in September 2021, so there might have been changes or updates regarding the Roopkund trek after that date. It's always a good idea to check with local authorities or reliable sources for the most up-to-date information before planning your trek.
